Climbing gyms are fun. All you have to do is show up, hang out with friends and climb until the holds beat you into a strange elation. You could say it’s a high that doesn’t have any gloomy comedowns. Sure, you know you burned a lot of calories and you’re starting to see definition, but those are just secondary side effects of the overall experience. Another thing about our local climbing gyms is that they like to share the love with events and programs for all ages and athletic abilities. Here’s what some of our local gyms are doing in 2026.
Wild Walls, the OG of forearm-busting hangouts located in downtown Spokane, offers weekly belay classes, beginner and intermediate clubs, ladies’ nights and killer yoga sessions to decompress from the hype. One of the most unique options is its select classes for people who suffer from Parkinson’s disease, and an adaptive climbing course for people with physical disabilities. Both courses are free of charge. All you need to do is go to the Wild Walls website and follow the instructions to join. Wildwalls.com.

Bloc Yard in north Spokane has some of the gnarliest bouldering you’ll find at any gym. Extreme overhangs, tall slabs and techy verticals abound. Another thing the gym does really well is host a yearly competition deemed “King of the Bloc.” This comp will be in the fall and is open to all ages and abilities. The great thing about competitions is they’re just an excuse to get together and have a good time. Of course, if you do end up winning the open category, you’ll go home with a little more cash in your back pocket. Also check out the upstairs renovation. You can balance out your overdeveloped lats, core and pumped forearms with various machines and free weights, or challenge your rival to an epic battle of pingpong or foosball. Blocyardgym.com.
Coeur Climbing Company in Post Falls will host a competition called “Flail Fest” in November. If you don’t know, all climbers flail, which essentially means failing on a climb that’s above their ability. It’s actually an aspect of climbing that’s a lot of fun. After all, the best climbers are the ones who don’t take themselves too seriously. If you don’t fall, you’re totally missing out. So check out Flail Fest and some of the other events and programs at Coeur Climbing: adult league (for all abilities), homeschool hangouts and comp teams. This place is all about having a good time and, occasionally, getting a local brewing company to chip in a few jolly pints. Coeurclimbing.com.
All these gyms have a lot to offer anyone interested in enhancing their fitness experience. Check out their websites and plan a trip. Bring a friend or step into the unknown with people you’ve been waiting to meet your whole life. The best part about going to the climbing gym is spending time with people who will cheer you on one hold at a time.
