Perched above Lake Chelan, Lakeside Surf brings a world-class surf experience to Central Washington, three hours west of Spokane. Lakeside is home to the world’s largest stationary deepwater wave. Unlike a traditional wave pool, this functions more like a river wave: a stationary feature built into the pool while water rushes past you. You start at the edge, drop into the current and carve back and forth across the face once you find your footing. Wake, river and ocean surfers of all abilities will quickly get the hang of it, and beginners can jump into a dedicated “Learn to Surf” package. Sessions for riders 10 and older include a board and instruction. Up to 12 surfers take turns at each session with an average wave wait time of five minutes or less. Or book a private group session.

This summer, Lakeside is hosting two can’t-miss competitions. Battle of the Butte (June 26–27) is an open-registration river surf comp where anyone from local beginners to seasoned pros can compete. Then in September, the Continental Surf Cup (Sept. 5–6) brings an elite international showdown—Team USA vs. Team Europe, with 24 of the world’s best river surfers competing in a unique team format. Both events are free to watch with food and drinks available at Surfside Tacos and Twocan Jenny’s Surf Bar. Enjoy the sweeping lake views and cool off at the adjacent Slidewaters water park (separate admission). More info at Lakesidesurf.com.
