History of the Dishman Hills and the Spokane Mountaineers

Join Spokane Mountaineers for talk on History, Conservation, and the Future of Dishman Hills

Jeff Lambert and Chris Kopczynski will present the history of the Dishman Hills on Tuesday, January 16th, at 7:00 p.m. This hour and a half presentation will also highlight the conservation efforts of the Spokane Mountaineers, who’ve been recreating in the area since the 1920’s and have taken a leadership role in protecting the largest conservation area in Spokane.

Chris Kopczynski, President of the Dishman Hills Conservancy, will share his story on how the Dishman Hills changed his life in 1964 through a chance meeting with the Mountaineers. Kopczynski is a world-renowned climber who has made the Seven Summits, including Everest. He’s devoted his life to conservation, and believes Dishman Hills area is the Central Park of Spokane. The history of the Hills and the Mountaineers is intertwined with climbing and other recreation, which Kopczynski will discuss.

Jeff Lambert, Executive Director of the Dishman Hills Conservancy, will cover the successful efforts that have been made to protect this conservation land after Tom Rogers founded the DHC in 1966. Lambert was chair of the Mountaineers Conservation Committee in 2002 when the club led the effort to create the Dream Trail conservation corridor protecting all of the Dishman Hills from Appleway to Palouse. Lambert will provide an update on current prospects to connect existing conservation areas in a huge recreation and conservation corridor.

Spectacular videos and photographs will accompany the presentation. The event is free and open to members of the public who wish to learn more about the Spokane Mountaineers. Light refreshments will be served.

The Mountaineers would like to thank Mountain Gear for making the beautiful atrium at their Spokane Headquarters and warehouse available for this event. Join us at 6021 E Mansfield Ave, Spokane Valley – 3 blocks South of Fancher Rd & Trent Ave.
