Chicken Sh@#

Chicken

There’s an entire ecosystem inside the Saranac Gallery right now. An ecosystem.

Woah.

It’s not a strange trip we’re on; it’s an exhibit called “Chicken Sh@#: Exploring Urban Ecosystems.”

From artist Rimas K. Simaitis’s website: “Chicken Sh@# will feature the day-to-day lives of four chickens, decomposing piles of garbage, and a self-contained bionic hydroponic growing system designed to cultivate grass within one’s own chest. Interactive elements will encourage visitors to sow their own seeds, and propose alternative uses for hubcaps. The exhibition provides a critical examination of the urban ecosystem, ultimately exploring DIY culture, waste, and alternative means of food production.”

The exhibit runs through January 30th, but this week includes a cool related event:

Tuesday, January 19th: Big River – film and Q&A with filmmaker Curt Ellis.

11:30 am  & 7:30 pm at the Lair Auditorium at Spokane Community College. Documentary film (30 min) about environmental impact of conventional farming in Iowa, followed by interactive Q&A with filmmaker Curt Ellis. More about te movie at www.bigriverfilm.com. Info: 509-533-8048. http://www.scc.spokane.edu/?hfchevents.

Between the 11:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. showings of Big River at SCC’s Lair Auditorium, Ellis will visit to the Saranac Art Project, where Gabriel Brown’s fantastic show entitled “Chicken Sh@# – Exploring Urban Ecosystems” is currently on display. Curt will speak from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. around the large very urban chicken coop installation. A tour of the co-op will be available after Curt’s presentation.

Free and open to the public.
