A Summer Escape to Sandpoint’s Mountains and Lake

Sandpoint does summer right. Big lake days. High-country trails. Long evenings that make it easy to stay out later than planned. Start in the mountains. Schweitzer’s trail network opens up in summer with miles of hiking and mountain biking above Lake Pend Oreille. Scenic chairlift rides offer an easy way to take in the Selkirks on foot or bike without the climb. Other nearby hiking favorites like Maiden Rock offer the reward of a lake swim after the steep 2-mile hike.

Then there’s the lake. Lake Pend Oreille anchors summer life in Sandpoint with kayaking, paddleboarding, wakesurfing, and fishing from one of many access points around the lake or swimming and relaxing on the sand right in town at City Beach. However you get out there, the water tends to become the center of the trip.

When the sun starts dropping behind the mountains, Sandpoint settles into its evening rhythm. Patios fill up, live music spills into downtown and frequent live music and events like the Festival at Sandpoint bring lakeside concerts through the heart of summer.
