Spokane’s new co-op is gearing up. I just received this:

Main Market Cooperative Board of Directors Holds First Public Meeting
Spokane, WA – The Main Market Co-Op Board of Directors is hosting a public meeting Wednesday, August 6, 2008. The meeting is at the Community Building Lobby, 35 West Main Street, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

The Board of Directors has met regularly over the last couple of months to discuss the process of forming a consumer cooperative. The board members reflect a diverse group of representatives in the Spokane community. As board member Michael Woods, SJ of Gonzaga University shared, “We look forward to bringing the Inland Northwest an accessible downtown grocery store that focuses on regional, organic and sustainable foods and builds community using the cooperative ownership model.”
The Community Building, LLC is helping to sponsor the event. There will be a presentation on what it means to be a consumer cooperative and the numerous benefits. The group will also present the mission of Main Market Co-op and details of the educational activities being offered at the co-op such as, In the Field – our summer series of farm tours.

The Board of Directors hopes the public meeting will draw residents interested not only in joining the food co-op, but also in helping to stock its shelves. Topics such as member-owner investment and benefits, and governance are still being worked on, and the group looks to solicit input in these areas. A community-based co-op also requires community resources to open its doors. The board will share a variety of ways to support Main Market. At the end of the meeting, there will be time to field questions from the audience.
