Local Businessess Can Help Cut Traffic Congestion

Cut the Congestion is a one-year grant program that is being offered to local businesses by Commute Smart Northwest. This community-based outreach program aims to help businesses develop commute-smart programs to encourage employees to ride transit, bicycle, carpool, vanpool or walk to work. These programs are designed to reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality, and optimize mobility for goods and services. Businesses offering commute smart programs can benefit by experiencing a reduction in employee absenteeism, an increase in employee productivity, and the ability to recruit and retain the best employees.

Spokane County’s Public Works Commute Smart Northwest program works with over 100 businesses throughout Spokane County to implement Commute Smart programs. Celebrating the success of Commute Trip Reduction (CTR) in Spokane County recently, nearly 200 people attended the 2022 Commute Smart Champions Awards event on Thursday, February 9. With support from employers, business leaders, government agencies and others, the results of the CTR program remove over 8,300 vehicles from our roadways each day in Spokane County, reducing over 141,000 daily miles from being driven on our roads. Those miles not driven equates to reducing 5.7 trips around the world each day. Looking at it from a yearly perspective, the Commute Smart program removes over 2.1 million trips and over 36.6 million miles not driven in and around our community.
