Help Protect The Selkirks and Cabinet-Yaak Grizzly Bears!
Grizzly bears in the Selkirk Mountains of eastern Washington through the Idaho Panhandle and into the Cabinet Mountains and Yaak River watershed in northwest Montana are severely threatened from habitat fragmentation, extensive road networks, motorized vehicles and development. These grizzly bear populations are barely hanging on, requiring supplementation from other populations in recent years.
The Forest Service has been developing new forest plan standards to limit motorized access into grizzly bear habitat within parts of the Kootenai, Idaho Panhandle and Lolo National Forests in Montana and Idaho . Limiting motorized access will improve habitat security for these magnificent animals, which tend to avoid areas of highest human use. The Forest Service recently published its Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (DSEIS) to adopt Forest Plan Amendments within the Selkirk and Cabinet-Yaak Grizzly Bear Recovery Zones.
