For the first time ever, USA Climbing will be holding a bouldering competition at The Bloc Yard bouldering gym on September 30. USA Climbing is the national governing body of competition climbing, and thus this competition is a big deal for local climbers. As Brett Jessen, manager of The Bloc Yard, points out, holding the competition in Spokane will allow parents and climbers to stay local and avoid having to travel to Seattle or Boise during the busy school year. Brett, along with owner Adam Healy and head route setter, Chelsea Murn, has been hard at work setting for the competition. “With over 50 youth competitors signed up and an additional 120 in the adult category that have reached out, we expect a huge turnout for the 1st annual [climbing comp],” explains Brett. There will be a Citizen competition heat after the USA Climbing local followed by finals at 6 p.m. Spectators are welcome and there will be Kombucha and craft beer on tap.
