If you’ve ever tried to pitch a bike-park weekend to someone convinced it’s all double-black diamonds and full-face helmets, Silver Mountain Resort makes the conversation easier. In Kellogg, the same gondola that hauls skiers in winter becomes a summer shuttle for downhill laps, a scenic ride for nonriders and a low-effort way to start the day together with the option for everyone to settle into their own pace.
The gondola climbs 3.1 miles from town to the Mountain House, where cooler air and wide views signal you’ve left the freeway behind. From there, riders roll straight into Silver Mountain Bike Park. The draw is range. Newer riders can stick to machine-built flow trails with wide berms and predictable features, building skills lap by lap. As confidence grows, so do the options. More experienced riders can seek out steeper lines, technical sections and jump trails that require a little more commitment. “Progression-friendly” here means you don’t have to show up as an expert to have a good day, and you don’t outgrow the terrain once you find your rhythm.
For those skipping the bike park, the gondola ride itself is worth it. From the summit area near the Mountain House, hiking trails wander through open slopes and pockets of trees, with beargrass and wildflowers in early summer. A short walk delivers broad views over the Silver Valley without committing to an all-day outing. It’s an easy way for a group to start in the same place and then branch off without anyone feeling sidelined.

Back at the base, everything revolves around Gondola Village. Morning Star Lodge sits steps from the gondola, and booking through Silver Mountain Lodging includes admission to Silver Rapids Indoor Waterpark, billed as the largest indoor water park in the region. The air stays at 84 degrees, and the mix includes a lazy river, slides, the FlowRider surf simulator, hot tubs and a full-service bar overlooking the pool deck. After a dusty afternoon on the mountain, it’s a smooth transition from pads and helmets or hiking boots to sandals and a soak.
Meals don’t require much logistics either. Noah’s Canteen and Wildcat Pizza are right in the village, and historic downtown Kellogg is a short walk or drive away. Radio Brewing remains a reliable stop for dinner and a pint.
For a lower-key spin, the paved Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes runs through the Silver Valley, offering a relaxed biking and walking trail that works for kids, cruisers and anyone more interested in scenery than airtime. Golfers can find their own happy place at Galena Ridge Golf Course.
The bike park typically opens for the season in late May or early June, starting with weekend operations before shifting to more frequent service in the summer. Riders can choose single-day lift tickets or opt for a season pass if repeated laps at Silver are in your summer plans.
Not everyone in your crew will want to ride the same trails, or even ride at all. At Silver Mountain, they don’t have to. The gondola, the bike park, the hiking and the water park all orbit the same compact base, making it easy to build a weekend where different speeds and interests still line up at the end of the day.
