Every town has that one season locals quietly hope visitors don’t discover. In Rossland, it’s fall.
Sure, summer gets the mountain biking glory and winter has the powder. But somewhere in between is a couple of months where the trails are quieter, the coffee somehow tastes better, and the hills turn every shade of gold. It’s the kind of season that doesn’t need to show off. It just casually reminds you why you came to the mountains in the first place.
The temperatures have finally figured themselves out. You can spend all day outside without melting on the climbs or freezing on the descents. The larches start putting on their annual golden show. The patios are still open. And while the rest of the province is squeezing in one last camping trip or waiting for ski season to arrive, Rossland is quietly doing what it does best—making it really hard to leave.
Chase Gold
In the early 1890s, mining gold was the name of the game in Rossland. Explorers, miners and community members alike headed to the hills to stake their claim. Now, the locals head out looking for gold, but it is found in the trees, literally. We’re talking about the golden larch!
Every fall, these unique alpine trees swap their green needles for brilliant shades of gold before dropping them for the winter. It’s a pretty spectacular sight, and Rossland has plenty of front-row seats.
Larch Ridge Trail (best experienced on a bike) is the obvious choice—it’s literally in the name—but it’s far from your only option. With over 125 miles of trails for biking, hiking, trail running and leisurely walks, it’s easy to find your perfect route.
Looking to earn your views? Old Glory is a Rossland classic. Short on time? The Kootenay Columbia Trail from the Centennial parking lot will take you to one of the best lookouts over town. It’s the perfect reminder that you don’t always have to venture far in Rossland to find a great view.

Ride Now. Thank Yourself Later.
Ask a mountain biker when Rossland’s trails are at their best, and don’t be surprised if they say September.
The dust has settled, the temperatures have cooled off, and the trails somehow seem to ride even better. It’s the kind of dirt that keeps your tires glued to the trail and convinces you that “just one more lap” is always a great idea.
Of course, the legendary Seven Summits Trail deserves a place on every rider’s bucket list. As one of only a handful of International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) Epic trails in Canada, it’s 21 miles of alpine singletrack, challenging climbs and unforgettable views. It’s not exactly an easy afternoon cruise—but the best adventures rarely are.
Looking for something a little more relaxed? Rossland’s trail network has everything from scenic cross-country rides and flow trails to family-friendly loops, all within minutes of downtown. And unlike some mountain bike destinations, you’ll spend more time riding than waiting for a parking spot or squeezing past crowds at the trailhead.
Slow Down. You’re on Mountain Time.
Not every great fall day needs to involve chasing a summit or setting a personal best. Some of the best moments happen after the adventure.
Start your morning with a locally roasted coffee before wandering downtown’s collection of independent shops, galleries and outdoor stores. Grab lunch on a patio while the sun is still warm enough to make you question whether you actually need that flannel. (You do. It’s fall in Canada.)
When evening rolls around, Rossland’s restaurants, pubs and local craft brewery are more than happy to help you refuel. Whether you’re celebrating a big ride, recovering from a long hike or simply rewarding yourself for successfully identifying a larch tree, you’ll find everything from casual comfort food to elevated dining. Calories consumed after outdoor adventures don’t count anyway … or so we’ve heard.
And when it’s time to call it a day, you’ve got options. Cozy cabins tucked into the mountains, the Lion’s Community Campground for those hanging onto summer just a little longer or hotels right downtown. However you like to travel, Rossland has a place to rest your head before tomorrow’s adventure.

Stay for It All
As if colorful mountains and world-class trails weren’t enough, fall also happens to be packed full of events.
The fun kicks off September 4-6 with Into the Trees, a mountain music festival that’s quickly becoming one of Rossland’s favorite weekends. Hosted in the quaint backyard of the Ram’s Head Inn, the festival pairs live music with a daytime Beer & Cider Festival. Spend the afternoon sampling local pours, then settle in for an evening of live performances beneath the stars. Intothetrees.ca
The following weekend, September 11-13, Golden City Days is Rossland’s historic fall fair festival. Think live music, local vendors, family activities, great food, outhouse races (you have to see it to believe it) and enough small-town charm to make you wonder why you haven’t visited Rossland already. Mountain bikers can finish the season on a high note. The Red Mountain Bike Park (in its second year of operation) is open until September 20 and hosts its annual Whip Off event where riders launch off the Can O’ Worms jump and show off their biggest whips! The BC Cup Downhill Championships bring some of the province’s fastest riders to tackle RED’s technical terrain over the long weekend. Redresort.com/events
And that’s not all—the season wraps up with a bang! Red Teeth Wine Festival happening September 26, the Grey Ghost Pursuit Gravel Race September 26-27, and the Rossland Arts & Culture Festival at the Rossland Museum that same weekend.
Fall Steals the Show
Rossland has always been known for big winters and incredible summers. But fall? Fall is the season that quietly steals the show. It’s where golden larches replace wildflowers. Where crisp mornings turn into sunny afternoons. Where you can spend the day hiking, biking, wandering downtown or dancing at a music festival—all without crowds.
We probably shouldn’t be telling you all of this. Fall has been one of Rossland’s best-kept secrets for a while now. But the secret’s out, so what are you waiting for?
