Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use daily (from electric scooters and bikes to tools and portable electronics), but improper disposal of these batteries can pose serious fire and safety hazards. “Fires caused by lithium-ion batteries are very difficult to extinguish and pose significant additional risks to firefighters,” says Lance Dahl, Fire Marshal for Spokane Fire Department. “This is a public safety issue in our homes and businesses every day.”
In response to the public safety and environmental threats posed by the proliferation of lithium-ion batteries, Battery Smart Spokane, a regional campaign supported by local agencies and the Spokane River Forum, aims to raise awareness about the safe use and disposal of lithium-ion batteries. Residents are encouraged to follow best practices for purchasing, charging, storing, and discarding lithium-ion batteries to protect their homes and communities from potential fires.

Fortunately, there are easy ways to dispose of these batteries responsibly. A collection event in May gave Spokane County residents a safe option to discard batteries, helping reduce dangerous waste, and more disposal events may be scheduled this summer. Spokane-area residents can also easily drop off batteries at any Spokane County Disposal and Transfer Station at any time. More information about battery safety, disposal, and a waste and recycling directory can be found at the Spokane River Forum and Spokane County Solid Waste websites.
