The Spokane County Library District is hosting a series of free outdoor skills programs and classes this summer. On June 3, 10, 17, and 24, WSU Extension Master Gardener Kurt Madison will present “Lewisia & Clarkia: Plants of Lewis & Clark,” covering botanical discoveries from the Lewis and Clark expedition, at the North Spokane, Moran Prairie, Argonne, and Otis Orchards libraries respectively. Charlie Bouck of Herbal Expeditions will lead two programs: an Intro to Wilderness Survival class at the Airway Heights, Deer Park and Argonne libraries on June 11, 17, and 24 (6:30–7:30 p.m.), and a foraging hike at Waikiki Springs on June 27 from 10 a.m. to noon. Registration is required, and a Discover Pass is needed for trailhead parking. Curtis Raymond will teach a hands-on Beef Jerky Made Easy class at Otis Orchards Library on June 23, Medical Lake Library on July 13 and Deer Park Library on August 15.

In August, the series wraps up with a Medical Lake Geo-Walk & Water Sampling event on August 11 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Waterfront Park. Led by Chad Pritchard, professor of geology at EWU, and Steve Cooper, director of Wastewater Reclamation for the city of Medical Lake, the 3-mile walk takes participants around the lake to learn about its history and natural science while collecting water samples for stormwater research. Open to adults and tweens, the walk is a rare chance to contribute to real scientific fieldwork while getting outside. All programs are free through the Spokane County Library District. Contact your local branch for registration details.
