SPOKANE VALLEY, WASH—Once the repaving project along eastbound Appleway between Dishman-Mica and University wraps up later this week, drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists will notice a new kind of striping for the bike lanes that run along the curb lane on the south side of the roadway.
Referred to as a “buffered bike lane,” the new markings consist of two solid white stripes about two feet apart.
“The double striping and space in between provide more of a safety buffer between vehicles and bicyclists,” explained City of Spokane Valley Traffic Engineer Inga Note. The two bright white, reflective stripes are also more conspicuous than a single stripe.
The double striping can be accommodated along that segment of Appleway because some of the lanes there are wider than the standard lane width. The slightly narrower lane width is not expected to be noticeable to motorists.
