Riders looking for a midsummer gravel test with big views and multiple distance options can mark July 11 on the calendar for the Koocanusa Scramble at Abayance Bay Marina in Rexford, Mont. Hosted by Bike Walk Montana, the Scramble is designed as both a challenge and a celebration of mixed-surface riding in the Salish Mountains above Lake Koocanusa. Courses wind along forest roads and rolling terrain with long stretches of open sky and sweeping water views that define this corner of northwest Montana.

The Black Butte Challenge covers 90 miles for those ready to settle in for a full-day effort. The Butterfly Effect offers a 45-mile option that still delivers plenty of climbing and scenery, while the Electric Wings E-Bike Variation spans 44 miles. Families and newer riders can opt for the 5-mile Family Ramble (bike or walk). Camping is available on-site, and there are other nearby lodging options. Proceeds support Bike Walk Montana’s statewide advocacy work to make communities safer and more accessible for people who bicycle, walk and roll. (OTO)
