Winter’s Not Over Yet: Road Trip Through the Kootenay Vortex

Snowboard, check. Boots, check. Goggles, check. Passport, check. In mid-March, I loaded my rig and headed north from Spokane to Canada. After a few short hours through the Colville forest via Hwy 25, I crossed the border into BC.

My main intention for the trek was to check out the 2nd Annual Rattlecat Cup at Red Mountain. (One of the newer slalom races in the area, it drew around 130 riders this year, with an impressively technical and steep course).

After the Rattlecat Cup at Red, we caravanned up to Whitewater to shred fresh pow. We spent the day discovering the powder-covered drops, chutes and epic tree lines of WH2O. Next year, I will return during proper conditions and remember my backcountry gear.
